Using feathers in weddings is not a new concept, we have used all kinds of feathers from all sorts of birds - ostrich, peacock, quail, etc although we sometimes forget where these wonderful feathers come from. This weekend I came up close and personal with a very beautiful peacock who was so eager to show all his feathers

Weddingbells asked us to provide fall inspired bouquets, and centerpieces. We absolutely loved doing the pumpkin one with fresh cymbidum orchids, another centerpiece was comprised of sunflowers, the bouquet which was lush and full filled rich in rustic tones had callas, dahlias, orchids and eucalyptus. Spring is almost here but at Canada Blooms spring has sprung. There are thousands of beautiful flowers are blooming and the aroma of fresh flowers is in the air.

At Nice Stems we LOVE Canada Blooms and once again we were asked to be apart of the Professional Florists displays. This year the theme is JUNO and what better way to show our love for music and flowers than to create a one of a kind arrangement where the flowers are made from old vinyl records and fresh flowers.

Peonies Wedding Bouquets

Peonies are absolutely beautiful. They are lush blooms that grow in red, shades of pinks (from light pink to hot pink, white and cream. They are so popular, most want them but not everyone can have them, as they have a limited season. Theses beauties are grown outdoors, and while they can be imported there is still a limited growing season in other countries.

After all the peonies have disappeared a great contender is the garden rose. They are fragrant and beautiful and can often look like peonies. Just remember that they cost a bit more than roses but if the flutter flower look is something you want for your wedding than the garden rose is a perfect flower.

I Love Nice Stems!! For our September 2010 wedding i visited many a florist trying to find the right fit. Margarite right away makes you feel as though your wedding/event is special and unique.. and she is just as excited as you are, it was such an amazing experience! At many other places you are treated as 'just another' wedding. Margarite takes the time to listen to your ideas and brainstorm on different ways to make that a reality. I for one wasn't 100% sure about what i wanted in regards to my bouquet and she took the time to help me figure that out. I know everyone keeps saying this, but it is so true.. Margarite goes the extra mile!! Any question i had or additional idea i wanted incorporated was always answered right away and she was always happy to do it. Black and White Flowers - Weddingbells Magazine

Black and white is awesome as a wedding color scheme. It is classy, and modern chic. So when Weddingbells Magazine asked Nice Stems for bouquets, centerpieces and boutonnieres that incorporated these colors we sent them a bouquet with chocolate cosmos, white gerberas with dark center and commercial mums. The centerpiece was similar in style using hydrangea and gerberas with dark centers in a high gloss black container (will post pics at a later time). The boutonniers were simple finished with black satin a nd a small detail. Although we were limited as there is not a huge amount of flowers that appear "black" the flowers we selected worked out beautifully. Happy viewing!

We had requested for a green apple themed wedding and Margarite delivered with creativity and spot-on sensibility. Everything she did exceeded our expectations: the two large floral arrangements near the alter and the two green apple filled white urns were at once whimsical and classy, the centerpieces on the welcome table and dinner tables were contemporary and romantic, and the soft petal arrangement on the cake table is simple yet stunning. Nice Stems is indeed amazing, and we would concur with the other reviews in saying that Margarite really does go the extra mile - which shows in her beautiful work!!! Everyone raved about our flowers - particularly my bouquet (red, black centered anemones with black feathers), and I coudn't have been happier with them! Margarite is not only super professional and creative, but is also lovely to work with, and her bubbly personality is infectious! We would definitely recommend to other couples - her flowers and artfulness really added an amazing touch to our October 2010 wedding! Erin

I Love Nice Stems... I Love Margarite...‎‎ What can we say about Margarite but that she is just amazing.... from the moment we met her, we knew we were going to have a beautiful wedding. We just fell in love with her positive happy personality and felt so relaxed knowing that she was going to take care of our special day. We met with few florists before meeting Margarite but she was the only one who listened to everything that we had to say and came up with something so elegant and extravagant with our simple ideas. She is just amazing. She will sit with you until your vision comes to life. We didn`t even realize we could come up with something so beautiful but her creative suggestions helped us to picture everything we were going to see on the day. She was so organized that we had no questions and doubts throughout the whole process. We fully believed from the beginning that everything was going to run smoothly and that we were going to have the most beautiful wedding. HOW EARLY SHOULD I BOOK MY FLORAL DESIGNER / FLORIST FOR MY WEDDING?

Every year we have couples who contact us regarding their wedding flowers to only find out we are already booked on their wedding day. So here’s some advice on when you should inquire / book your wedding florist / floral designer.

If you have your heart set on a florist book a consultation. Don’t hesitate. Waiting means someone else with the same wedding date will contact them before you, especially during high season which for us is now between April – November.

Information you should have before booking:
- Wedding Date
- Ceremony / Venue Location – these locations can set the tone of the overall look.
- Guest count – for centrepieces
- Color scheme / Style of wedding – not imperative but sometimes helps with flowers selection.

After the consultation an estimated quote will be provided. At which time you can decide if you would like to book by signing a contract and putting down a deposit. With our clients we meet again several months before the wedding to go over the details again and make changes if needed.

Dates to keep in mind that effect availability:

- Valentines Week and Mothers Day Weekend – some floral shops will not entertain weddings as their sales during these days are more profitable than handling a wedding with all the details. Also flowers are more expensive during these weeks as demand is higher.

- Christmas and New Years - some people just want to take these holidays off to spend with their families.

Most florists have a limit on how many weddings they can take in a day.
Great floral designers book quickly. To avoid disappointment contact the florist /floral designer of your choice early.

Everyone knows how much we love the Liberty Grand in Toronto; we have done countless weddings there. From aisle decor both indoor and outdoor in the courtyard, centerpieces, head tables, bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages we always come up with new designs that best represent our couples.

That being said we are so proud to announce that we have been on their preferred vendors list for the past few months. We were also asked to provide a floral centerpiece for their display at the Metro Toronto Convention Wedding show. We figured "go big or go home".

Margarite is seriously the best florist in this city. You won't find anyone else who is as detail oriented, creative and passionate about what she does than her. She went the extra mile for our October 2010 wedding...from the chuppah, to the decor to my gorgeous bouquet of orange calalillies, everything was completely perfect! She's also such a great person to work with. She was able to help us make decisions on our colors and our decor as we weren't exactly sure what we wanted walking in. She takes her job very seriously so everything you see at your wedding will be completely perfect. She also does everything with a smile! I know so many people who have had their flowers arrive and they are either wilting or they aren't exactly what they ordered. That will NOT happen with Margarite. "All I can say is AMAZING! We had an idea of what we wanted as far as centerpieces, but were open to suggestions, and one I told her what our venue was she began sketching and had me sold. She designed for us exactly what we wanted but could not describe. The floral designs from Nice Stems were gorgeous, and affordable, when we mentioned a budget she did not go over it, and did as much as she could with what we had to work with. All of our guests loved the centerpieces, and Yancy and I could not have been more happy with her service and design skills. This was certainly one of our favourite vendors…we give her + Nice Stems two thumbs up…5 stars, etc!"

Wedding Tradition - Tossing the Bouquet

The bridal bouquet toss tradition goes back to 14th century France where it was believed that a bride was especially lucky on her wedding day. After the ceremony guests would try to tear a piece of fabric from the brides dress for luck. For a brief time, in an effort to stop the attacks on the bride, the bride would throw her stockings or garter. Eventually tossing the bouquet became widely used. It is said that the person who catches the bouquet is next to marry.

Most brides choose to keep their own bouquet and have a smaller one as the toss bouquet.

Some brides completely opt out of this tradition,

while others prefer to hand the bouquet to a honoured guest.

On Stage

I had the best time being on stage at Canada Blooms doing what I love most - designing with flowers. We were given a bucket filled with flowers and foliage from "Pick Ontario" growers and surprise containers to work with. With fresh tulips, gerbera daisies, green spider mums, freesia, lisianthus, aspidistra leaves, anthrium leaves and palms I created 4 unique bouquets including a tuzzy mussie I had in my tool kit. These bouquets were than offered to the audience who absolutely loved them.

Wow Factor - Aisle Decor

Aisle decor is an important aspect of a wedding ceremony. Often enough the most memoroable photos are taken during the ceremony therefore adding an aisle runner, candles, florals etc. can dramatically change the ceremony space.

Also a key note on outdoor weddings- most venues will provide a rain option indoors therefore when decideing on whether you need aisle decor keep in mind that weather may force the wedding ceremony indoors and visually most likely need a empahazied an aisle, especially when the room will be used again for the reception.

I always place emphasis on small details. Guests always remember these small details that can truly complete a look of a wedding.

A single flower bloom at each place-setting, a floral cake topper on a table covered with rose petals, adds texture and color tying the overall look and feel of the wedding.

One of our most memorable weddings this past summer was Roya + Richard at Graydon Hall Manor. This wedding had all the details of a traditional Iranian wedding. We had the opportunity to stay to watch the wonderful ceremony as the couple took their vows in a very lavish and beautiful setting.
